(English Riviera Business Improvement District – Second Term)
ERBID1 came into being in January 2017. Its primary purpose was to deliver professionally coordinated Destination Marketing for the English Riviera.
The English Riviera is surrounded by a stunning coastline and countryside. Comprising the towns of Torquay, Paignton, Babbacombe & Brixham, it is famous for its beaches and palm trees but it offers much more with an array of large and small attractions, award winning accommodation and dining as well as a UNESCO Global Geopark and a National Park on its doorstep.
ERBID1 is driven by a private sector management approach and the belief that local business should influence and control decisions about their destination. The team continues to work assiduously on your behalf, to meet your needs and aspirations, no more so than in the current situation with the unprecedented challenges presented by the Covid pandemic.
Your BID levy currently raises over £500,000 each year to deliver the projects that you, the businesses voted for. Your commitment has allowed us to secure over £300,000 in external funding as well. Working alongside a range of other partners, the Board of Directors (drawn from local business representatives and who work on a voluntary basis) have endeavoured to deliver the Business Plan projects.
The English Riviera tourism industry is a central part of its economy and provides much of its strength and livelihood with the business it attracts and the jobs related to that.
- Tourism in Torbay generates approximately £600m of business turnover pa to benefit the local economy
- Visitor spend directly benefits over 1000 businesses and many more indirectly
- £120m is spent annually by visitors to Torbay on food & drink alone
- Over 20% of the local population work in the tourism industry
- Nearly 12,000 people are employed in tourism in Torbay
In 2021 the ERBID will be coming to the end of its first five-year term and so will the hard-won progress we have made to date. We now look to you to review our work to date and to build upon this by helping us to deliver the ERBID2 Business Plan for the next 5 years by voting “YES” to renew the ERBID with a renewal ballot provisionally planned for June 2021. Remember that if you choose for ERBID1 not to continue then all the work and achievements so far will cease on the 31st December 2021.
Formal consultation of the first Draft ERBID2 Business Plan is scheduled to start in the New Year when you will be invited to share your views and to help shape the final ERBID2 Business Plan, which is the document that all eligible Levy Payers will be invited to vote on in a postal ballot scheduled to take place summer 2021.
A ‘NO’ vote will lose the English Riviera over £4m over the 5 next years as well as the gains we have made over the previous 5 years so we sincerely hope that the majority of businesses will be voting ‘Yes!’
