This month saw ER businesses reporting a slight decrease in their visitors (-2.89%) with relatively level turnover (+0.71%) compared with the same time last year. The decrease in visitors was similar to the region as a whole (-2.02%) whilst the slight increase in turnover on the Bay compared with a decrease in turnover for regional businesses (-1.49%). Overall the month can be viewed as relatively stable when factors such as survey margins of error, the proportion of year round business that January accounts for and the numbers of businesses closed are considered.
February and March outlooks currently look similar to 2018 levels but are likely to change when actual data is collected and the heavy snow and freezing temperatures the South West is currently experiencing could also have a significant impact on bookings during this time. Both months are of course still important to businesses but broadly speaking only account for a small proportion of tourism business overall in any given year and it is not unusual to see relatively large proportionate changes in these months when comparing with the previous year.
Business optimism decreased slightly this month and was calculated at 6.18, compared with 6.84 last month and 6.22 for the region as a whole.
A total sample of 60 this month (58% of whom were open for the month – 35 businesses).
