Once again, a less positive month for ER businesses with decreases in both visitors (-5.99%) and turnover (-4.53%). The region also saw decreases but on a slightly smaller scale (-3.64% visitors and -2.46% turnover).
Looking ahead, the outlook for August does not appear to be very positive either at this stage with 52% of businesses reporting decreases compared with the same time last year, although they are currently reporting a slightly more positive outlook for September with 53% expecting their business levels to be similar to or higher than September 2016. These could both change of course by the time the actual performance data is collected and hopefully the good weather over the August bank holiday weekend managed to boost trade a little after the poor weather in the weeks running up to it.
Overall the data collected through the survey to date continues to suggests that business levels for the ER are likely to be slightly down on 2016 although the final outcomes of performance in August and September could turn this around and will be crucial in determining the final outcome for 2017.
A total sample of 111 this month (all of whom were open for the month).
Business optimism was calculated at 5.93, compared with 6.09 for the region as a whole.
